Q: Will my pre-proposal be kept confidential?
A: Yes, all pre-proposals will be confidential within the Open Philanthropy Project and any external reviewers we engage.
Q: How many projects will Open Philanthropy fund?
A: There is no predetermined number. We will recommend projects we find compelling, innovative and which have high impact potential.
Q: Is there a deadline for submission?
A: The deadline is 11:59pm, May 12, 2017.
Q: Where do I upload the budget?
A: We do not need a detailed budget at this time. If your pre-proposal progresses, we will discuss a detailed budget.
Q: What is the budget limit for this RFP?
A: There is not a predetermined budget ceiling for the total amount of funds that we will distribute through this RFP.
Q: Does Open Philanthropy cover indirect costs (overhead)?
A: Open Philanthropy maintains a policy that limits indirect costs to 10% of total direct costs for colleges and universities and 15% for other non-profit organizations.
Q: When will we be notified about the status of our application?
A: We anticipate providing an update on the status of applications by early August 2017 (90 days after the close of submissions).
Q: What does Open Philanthropy consider to be a globally catastrophic event?
A: We define global catastrophic risks as scenarios that exceed tens of millions of fatalities or pose existential risks to civilization.
